Earlier today, ‘Rollin’’ achieved its fourth win. This marks the longest time between a group’s debut and their first win on a South Korean music show. Just this past week, however, Brave Girls snagged their first music show win with their track ‘Rollin’’. Two of the members, Yuna and Yujeong, had already moved out of their shared dorm. After years of moderate success and multiple line-up changes, the group was wondering whether it was time to call it a day. It’s yet another display of Brave Brothers’ songcraft mastery at work.In their own words, K-pop act Brave Girls were prepared for a similar fate in 2020, right after ending promotions for their song ‘We Ride’. Brave Girls’ voices can sometimes come across a bit sharp depending on the way they’re produced, but that characteristic actually enhances Rollin‘s chorus, bringing a sense of urgency to its climactic second half.

The song’s strongest moment is its dynamic chorus, which covers the gamut from breathy lower register to full-on rave.

Its verses float by without leaving much of a mark, contributing to the general vibe rather than drawing attention to themselves. Similarly, Rollin‘s melody doesn’t reach for any tricks or trends. It’s a classic, propulsive dance sound that should age quite well. Thankfully, the production smooths out any elements that might become derivative, tying every element together into a cohesive whole. The instrumental pulls from the popular tropical house trend, but rather than simply throw in a repetitive riff here and there, the entire track is built on this sunny synth sound. In doing so, it offers one of the girls’ most limber tracks yet. New single Rollin’ hits a middle ground between the sensuous Deepened and raucous High Heels, both from last year. And now that bigger groups like AOA and Sistar have (mostly) moved on to different producers, Brave Girls’ music is the best kind of k-pop throwback. This obviously limits their sound somewhat, but for fans of the Brave Brothers style, they’re pretty much the gift that just keeps on giving. For better or worse, Brave Girls have always been a delivery method for songs by their agency head, Brave Brothers.
